German violinist Albrecht Maurer, Romanian pianist Lucian Ban and American violist Mat Maneri have created a CD of shadowy subtlety that redefines the idea of a string trio. The three unearth a distinguishing blend, which takes as much from Eastern European memories, early music and microtonal inferences as jazz or notated music. Ban, now New York-based, and Maneri have explored similar concepts on previous CDs but Fantasm’s sound experiments are given addedresonance from Cologne-based Maurer, a reformed fusion musician.

It’s probably no surprise that the consummate definition of what this trio can achieve takes place during the violinist’s two-part suite “Aura” .Sequentially dark and light, the 11-plus-minute composition begins with Ban reconstituting tremolo strums so that they suggest an accordion’s shuddering bellows, as the fiddlers’ spiccato lines reference folkloric airs. Bridged by scratching pizzicato from one string player, the second movement is more overtly impressionistic, especially when it reaches a crescendo mixing dynamic piano patterns plus aviary flanges from the strings. Most compelling is how near-Asiatic motifs, referencing Eastern Europe’s Ottoman history, are craftily interpolated into the narrative. The trio’s compositions reflect their individualism. Maneri’s “Last Steps” is the most melancholic, with

spindly string jabs meeting piano patterns for expressive tonal dislocation. Ban’s five compositionsshare a more upbeat attitude: besides a methodicalexposition, they encompass discreet Romanian folklore twists on “Irreverence”; locked-groove jazz pulsing on“El Corazon”; and deepening swing constructed from comprehensive harmonies on “Pina”. The one composition that appears to have arrived intact fromthe 19th century romantic tradition is the title track, which was actually composed by the late drummer Paul Motian, an unhyphenated jazz master. It allows both violinist and violist to vibrate tender textures in contrast with Ban’s focused key-crunching until all three relax into a polyphonic rapprochement. Playing as a duo or in larger ensembles, Maneri and Ban have proven that they’re excellent interpretersof each other’s ideas. Maurer’s sympathetic partnership makes this trio expansion even more imposing.

Δεν θυμάμαι, μ’ ένα πρώτο ανασκάλεμα της μνήμης μου, άλλο jazz τρίο, που να απαρτίζεται από βιολί, πιάνο και βιόλα – οι Albrecht Maurer, Lucian Ban και Mat Maneri αντιστοίχως. Άρα, ένα πρώτο ερώτημα που προκύπτει είναι πώς μπορεί, από ενοργανικής άποψης κατ’ αρχάς, να σταθεί ένα τζαζ σχήμα από το οποίο απουσιάζει μία οποιαδήποτε μορφή κλασικού ρυθμικού τμήματος – ok, δεν είναι και τόσο δύσκολο, αν υποτεθεί πως ο ρόλος του μπάσου μπορεί να αναπληρωθεί, όσο μπορεί, από το πιάνο. Ένα δεύτερο ερώτημα αφορά στο αισθητικό κομμάτι του ακροάματος. Θα είναι “jazz” αυτό που θα φθάνει στ’ αυτιά μας, ή μια παραφθορά μιας κάποιας «μουσικής δωματίου»; Η απάντηση σε τούτο το ερώτημα είναι κάπως πιο δύσκολη. Ας πω μόνον πως οι τρεις μουσικοί (Maurer, Maneri, Ban), που έχουν διακεκριμένη τζαζ καριέρα, είχαν συναντηθεί (μαζί με άλλους) για πρώτη φορά σ’ ένα άλμπουμ της αμερικανικής Sunnyside, το “Enesco Re-Imagined” (2010), διασκευάζοντας σ’ ένα πνεύμα contemporary jazz συνθέσεις του διάσημου ρουμάνου George Enescu ή Enesco (κατά την γαλλική). Εννοώ, πως μια κλασική παιδεία είναι προφανής θα έλεγα ακόμη και από τα βιογραφικά των τριών. Ο Albrecht Maurer π.χ. έχει σπουδάσει βιολί στο Hochschule für Musik της Κολωνίας, ο Lucian Ban έχει σπουδάσει σύνθεση στη Μουσική Ακαδημία του Βουκουρεστίου και αναφέρει ως επιρροές του τους «σύγχρονους κλασικούς» συνθέτες της πατρίδας του Aurel Stroe, Anatol Vieru και φυσικά τον Enescu, ενώ ο Maneri έχει μαθητεύσει και αυτός δίπλα σε δασκάλους του Juilliard. Mat Maneri και Lucian Ban, τέλος, συναντήθηκαν πρόπερσι στο άλμπουμ της ECM “Transylvanian Concert”, προβάροντας μια μουσική που ακούγεται κάπως σαν «πρόγευση» του “Fantasm, The Loft Sessions” [Nemu, 2014]. 

Ηχογραφημένο σε δύο sessions, το 2012 και το 2013 στο Loft της Κολωνίας (Τζαζ Μέγαρο με σάλες, στούντιο κ.λπ.), το “Fantasm” είναι ένα έργο εννέα συνθέσεων (πέντε του Lucian Ban, δύο του Albrecht Maurer, μία του Mat Maneri και μία, το φερώνυμο “Fantasm”, του Paul Motian), που ακούγονται συχνά σαν προνομιακοί αυτοσχεδιασμοί τριών μουσικών, που έχουν την εμπειρία και τη γνώση να ανταποκριθούν στο κέλευσμα μιας μουσικής συνάντησης. Το πρώτο track τιτλοφορείται «Ασέβεια» (Irreverence)… και είναι κάπως δύσκολο να δώσεις μιαν εξήγηση… «γιατί άραγε;». Πιθανώς τούτο να οφείλεται στις παρατηρούμενες αλλαγές διαθέσεων. Αν και κατά βάση πρόκειται για ένα κάπως «σκοτεινό» και θλιμμένο track που ολοκληρώνεται στο πιάνο (και με τις παρεμβάσεις των εγχόρδων συνήθως να το «αποπροσανατολίζουν»). Κάτι που δεν συμβαίνει με το “Fantasm” που ακολουθεί – μία ελεγεία, με έντονα «δωματίου» στοιχεία. Απεναντίας, το 11λεπτο “Aura” δίνει την ευκαιρία στους τρεις συνθέτες-αυτοσχεδιαστές να απαλλαγούν από προκαθορισμένες δεσμεύσεις, προσφέροντάς μας μία σύνθεση που συνδυάζει «σύγχρονα κλασικά» και τζαζ-αυτοσχεδιαστικά στοιχεία, κερδίζοντας τις εντυπώσεις. Άλλα θέματα πάλι, όπως το “El Corazon” προβάλλουν ένα πάθος, κυρίως μέσω του βαθέως παιξίματος των εγχόρδων, ενώ άλλα, όπως το “Last steps” εξελίσσονται με μεγαλύτερη improv και περιπετειώδη διάθεση.

Γενικώς, το “Fantasm” είναι ένα απαιτητικό και κάπως «βαρύ» ακρόαμα, που γειτνιάζει περισσότερο με τα μοντέρνα «κλασικά» ακούσματα, χωρίς να στερείται συγχρόνως και ενός σοβαρού τζαζ ενδιαφέροντος.

The great thing about improvised music is its openness to other genres and styles, its basic inclusiveness often resulting in new and fascinating music, as on this wonderful album, an adjective to be taken in its original sense of being "full of wonder", offered to us here by Albrecht Maurer on violin, Mat Maneri on viola and Lucian Ban on piano, hailing respectively from Germany, the United States and Romania. All three musicians have made a comparable musical journey starting with a classical education, then shifting to the more open ground of jazz and modern classical music, atonal composition or experimental music.

The result is that all three find each other blindly, speaking the same language and easily shifting from one style to another in a seamless fashion, presenting music as a great whole without distinctions, offering us romantic moments interspersed with more hectic microtonal excursions or intense adventures into new realms. The basis is always a minimal agreement on a theme and a structure, but then they move this theme forward, expand on it, and make it all sound so natural, with beautiful improvised passages flowing organically forward, often in relatively compact pieces of around four to five minutes, each with their own character and approach.

As said, a 'wonderful' album full of musical treats.

Albrecht Maurer, Maneri and Lucian Ban´s new record, FANTASM, lives in the space where modern classical and avantgarde jazz meet. With the absence of percussion instruments and bass, the entire record has an airy feel. There is a cliché in jazz about how the space between the notes is as important as the notes themselves, and across every song here, the musicians are playing the space as well as the notes. Pieces such as "Elysium Planitia" have a heavy march cadence that moves into a dancing melody from Maurer´s violin over a pizzicato from Maneri. In a similar mode is "Last Steps" with it´s thoughtful, tentative mood.

But the recording is not all deep and dark. Songs like "Aura" work their way to great climaxes and come back down before the strings reach even higher over a chiming, strident piano. "El Corazon" starts with melancholy piano, soars inspirationally and then repeats that pattern in different ways. The title track, a Paul Motian composition, is also a highlight as it embodies the space and texture of the drumming master, but also reflects the urban New York nights where Motian worked. Throughout the record, the musicians on FANTASM balance mystery and exuberance with continual movement. This is a record that incorporates space and stillness without ever being still.
